Shortwave and Amateur Radio Links Page

"this page is a" in Morse code  Oops!

This page is a list of links dealing with radio, especially the hobbies of Shortwave and Amateur radio. (There are many broadcasters who broadcast on short-wave. There are American commercial and religious stations.  There are also public broadcasters like the BBC, CBC, and VOA. For various reasons, the number of stations are not as numerous as there used to be.) This is not a complete list of links. There are probably more thorough lists on the Internet. Check back here from time to time, as I find things I am apt to add them on here.

Right now, (March 2006) I am taking a class to get my "Tech" license. If you want to read about my progress and struggles to learn the material, please go to, the "My Life Lessons" page in the "Journal". I hope to write once in a while about my experiences of getting my first amateur license.  I don't know when and if I will be adding to that page, so check back to it once in a while.  You never know what might show up in the "Journal".  I add whole pages to it from time to time. I downloaded a ham radio class for my iPod at http://www.hamradioclass.org/ . It is a helpful addition to the class I am presently taking.

DXing is listening to "far away" stations.  A DXer is someone who listens to "far away" stations. As far as "my" radio hobby goes...I have been a DXer for a long time. I first saw "ham" or amateur radio in Missouri back in about 1977 or there abouts.  I saw the most incredible "ham shack" in Tennessee a few months after I was introduced to ham radio. I had always been a MW DXer (see below). I just didn't know that it was called, MW DXing. In Tennessee, I had a small transistor radio.  Normally, during the day, it only got WSM out of Nashville. I wasn't a Country Music fan in those days. I liked "pop" music. So I would struggle to listen to WLS from Chicago at night.  It was a "Top 40 station" in those days.  I started listening to short-wave radio in the early 1980's.  Boy do I miss the "old" BBC World Service.  I got my first short-wave, a boom box with SW, back in about 1984.  I got a "proper" short-wave radio back in the 1990's. I have been listening to short-wave a long time. I even have QSL cards from stations like Radio Moscow, HCJB, and Radio Kiev (Ukraine). I am also into MW-DXing.  That is, "Medium Wave DXing" or listening to AM broadcast stations from far away.  Usually this is done at night.  From here, I can get Toronto, De Moines, Iowa, Chicago, and of course Ohio stations.  People in England have been known to get "transatlantic DX", where they get mostly the East Coast of Canada and the U.S. Occasionally they have been known to get as far away as WJR in Detroit, and WBAP in Fort Worth, Texas. I assume these stations do not come in all that clearly.  There is even an offshoot of DXing with radio, called, TV-DXing. Yes, you can watch television from "out of your area". We have to try that when we want to watch British murder mysteries on TVOntario out of Canada.  I cannot tell you how many interesting things I have learned by listening to radio. The radio hobby is also a great way to meet people.  I have a long time pen pal from China that I met through the radio hobby.

This page is a list of links that I discovered while "doing" my radio hobby.

http://www.addx.de/ Homepage der ADDX -- Ihr Partner für internationalen Rundfunkempfang. This site is in German.  It is really great for people who want a listing of frequencies to listen to. It lists pretty much all the short-wave broadcasts in a particular language.  Each language section is listed by time.  You click on, "Hörfahrpläne" and then on the page you come to, you click on the language you want.  If you want to look at the listing for English you click on, "Englisch".  ("Franzöisch" is French.) I print out the English section at the beginning of the season.  Then I have a fairly accurate list of the stations broadcasting in English. I find it fairly easy to understand the German of the chart.  The times listed are UTC. Suppose you wanted to listen to something and it was 17:00 UTC.  You look at the chart, and see who is broadcasting at that time. Then you pick which one you want to hear, then scroll through the frequencies to see which ones you can pick up. This is one of my favorites!!

Some Short-Wave Radio Stations

A sampling of short-wave radio stations that can be heard on the radio.  Of course the BBC World Service keeps scaling back it's transmissions.  So it is getting harder to hear them on short-wave radio all the time.  I can pick up broadcasts to Africa. Traditionally these broadcasters broadcast in a wide variety of languages.  To learn about the languages, frequencies, and broadcast schedule times, please consult the links below. If you are a "news junkie", then short-wave radio is for you.  There are tons of things that happen in this world, that never make it to the "news" in the United States.  If you think that CNN, MSNBC, FOX News etc. have it covered, think again. There are many news stories that never make it there.  Only by listening to stations like Radio Australia, do you hear what is going on in other parts of the world.

Naturally, you have to "hold your tongue right" in order to try and hear these down where I live. I seem to hear them best if it is snowing out. I used to really enjoy the programs on Radio New Zealand.

"Old" Radio Stuff

Collecting old radios; Old Time Radio (OTR) programs; History of Radio; etc. There are tons of web sites with photos of old radios. I have difficulty looking at those sites.  I get in the mood for going to estate sales to find more old radios. In order to keep peace in the household, it isn't a good mood for me to be in.
